Three-Fingered Mitten - Experiment
|
This picture on the left is is a section from the painting called 'The Nativity' 1425 by Robert Campin. It depicts a shepherd with a three finger mittens on his hands. They look like they are lined with fur. Based upon this picture, I, as a glover, decided to crate a pattern and create a pair for my collection.
I realized something halfway through sewing the first mitten. I was thinking about this mitten as a glover would have. Therefore, I created a forchette to go between the finger split. Upon re-examination of all the drawings of a two-fingered glove, they were being worn by farmers, shepherds and workers. It looks like many do not have the accommodation for the forchette. I will finish my three fingered glove with the forchette, then I will make one without and compare. Pictures of my work are shown below. I will add more as I progress so please return. |
